Overview of the course:

This exciting course allows students to assume the role of a product designer. In year 10 students will explore the design and manufacture process of commercial products through a series of interesting design and make activities. During this time students will develop their designing and making skills in addition to developing a working knowledge of a range of materials, manufacturing processes (including the CAD/CAM) and hand tools. Towards the summer term of year 10 students will begin their controlled assessment task which is worth 60% of their GCSE which will continue into year 11. Students will be given the flexibility to work in a range of different materials including timbers, metals, plastics, paper and card.

Course content

Students will:

·         Develop a working knowledge of a range materials including timbers, metals, plastics, smart materials as well as paper and card

·         Learn how to examine existing products and critically analyse the use of materials and processes in their design and manufacture;

·         Develop an understanding of the broad perspectives of the design world. This will include the appreciation of line, shape, form, proportion, colour, movement and texture within an awareness of ergonomics and aesthetics;

·         Use a variety of industrial design and manufacturing techniques (including Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacture) developing an understanding of a range of manufacturing systems for the production of commercial products;

·         Gain invaluable transferable life skills such as problem solving and time management.

Exam Paper - 45551

At the end of Year 11, students sit a 2 hour written paper which constitutes 40% of the GCSE outcomes. The paper is divided into 2 sections of which students answer all questions :

Section A

A design question based on set context supplied to students before the exam.

Section B

Covers design and theory knowledge of product design taught throughout the course.


Controlled Assessment Coursework - 45552


This is a single design and make project based on an exam board set theme and is worth 60% of the overall GCSE. Students will be expected to design and make a working product and to document the process in a concise digital design portfolio.


Students who successfully complete this course will be awarded a GCSE graded A*-G.

Successful students may move on to study AS/A2 Product Design at The Sandon School.

Career Options

Students who study Product Design at GCSE and A - Level could enter into a career such as Product Design, Engineering, Architecture, CAD Design or Advertising.
