History

Statement of Intent

The History curriculum is vast and wide ranging. Our students will be challenged at all stages to recall events, dates and people as well as explain the significance of historical moments of the past. Our key stage 3 curriculum is predominantly taught chronologically from c 1066 in Year 7 to issues relating to the present day in Year 9.

Students are presented with a skills based curriculum which focuses on change and continuity, significance, causation, interpretations and source work. Knowledge acquisition is an important feature of a student’s learning journey.

Students at all key stages will find their lessons engaging, challenging and inspiring. We want to support the development of all learners and aim to create a safe space for children of all abilities to thrive. We want our young people to ask big questions about the world they live in and reflect on histories of the past to shape their viewpoints. We require students to be critical of the sources they read and to make thoughtful inferences. In addition, our history curriculum aims to delve into the hidden stories of minority groups, bringing their valuable stories to life.

Students will have an opportunity to study History at key stage 4 which has a focus on British history, European history and American history, from many different time frames. Our curriculum KS3-5 has been carefully mapped out to enable the students in key stage 4 to pull on skills and knowledge gained at key stage 3. Many students will continue their history journey into key stage 5, where they will be exposed to new and important historical studies in preparation for their future pathways.
