Statement of Intent

The mathematics curriculum aims to be ambitious for all students, inspiring a love of the subject and stimulating questions that go beyond the scope of the syllabus.  We aim to enthuse students and give them the confidence to tackle problems in any scenario.

Students are challenged through breadth rather than depth (in KS3 in particular), with additional time built into the schemes of work to allow for this.

We aim to build on prior learning from KS2, revisiting topics as required.

The spiral nature of the curriculum has check points built in at key points, in order that next steps can be successfully attained by students.  For example, powers and roots are discussed in year 8, extended to be used in algebra in year 9 and revisited again in year 10, which enables staff to adapt their teaching to the needs and experiences of their students in any given topic.

Content and order of delivery in years 10 and 11, and 12 and 13, are driven by the demands of exam syllabi. Students not sitting AS exams does mean however, that the A level scheme of work reflects a sensible teaching order for A-level success that is not constrained by the end of year 12 needs.
